The Influence of Future-Oriented Thinking on Delinquency Among Out-of-School Adolescents: Focusing on the Moderated Mediating Effect of Depression by Out-of-School Duration
Lee Rae-Hyuck

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to verify the direct influence of future-oriented thinking on delinquency among out-of-school adolescents, the mediating effect of depression on the direct influence, and the moderating effect of out-of-school duration on the mediating effect. Using a sample of 733 adolescents who were not in school at the point of survey from the 1st wave¡¯s raw data of the Panel Survey of School Dropouts, this study conducted analyses with the Process macro method¡¯s Models 4 and 7. The findings are as follow. First, out-of-school adolescents¡¯ future-oriented thinking negatively and significantly influenced delinquency. Second, out-of-school adolescents¡¯ depression fully mediated the influence of future-oriented thinking on delinquency. That is, the level of future-oriented thinking decreased the level of depression, which in turn decreased the level of delinquency. Third, the mediating effect of future-oriented thinking on delinquency through depression was moderated by out-of-school duration. Specifically, when out-of-school duration became longer, the protecting effect of future-oriented thinking on delinquency through depression became larger. This study, based on the findings, discussed ways to deal with out-of-school adolescents¡¯ delinquency through enhancing their future-oriented thinking.
